Contest Offers Young Hockey Enthusiasts the Chance to Play with
Fernando Pisani of the Edmonton Oilers
For Immediate Release
Red Deer, Alta – This August, children across Canada between the ages of 10 and 12, will have a chance to give back to their communities while lacing up their skates during the Score for Colitis & Crohn’s national contest featuring the Edmonton Oiler’s Fernando Pisani.
Since being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC) four years ago, Edmonton Oilers star Fernando Pisani has become a leading advocate for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
‘’This will be a fun day to raise awareness of colitis and Crohn’s,’’ says Pisani, who, through treatment, has been able to resume his NHL career – a career that was threatened by his diagnosis.
The Score for Colitis and Crohn’s contest encourages children to submit a one-page essay that describes one of the following:
- what it is like to have someone close to them living with Crohn’s disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis,
- what it is like to have CD or UC, or
- what it would mean to them to help raise funds for people living with these diseases and to be coached by NHL hockey player Fernando Pisani.
Over 200,000 Canadians suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)[i], which includes both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive system that may affect any area of the gastrointestinal tract. Crohn’s can occur at any age, however, it most frequently first occurs in young people, and about 10 per cent of newly diagnosed cases are in children under age 10.[ii]
Ulcerative colitis affects only the inner layer of the colon or large bowel and can also occur at any age, but most people are diagnosed before the age of 30.i
Contest Details
One-page essays to be submitted by young hockey enthusiasts or those who enjoy skating via email at ScoreForColitisandCrohns@sixdegreesmed.com, by fax to 416-643-8572 or by regular mail to Score for Colitis and Crohn’s, c/o Six Degrees Medical Consulting, 10 Bay Street, 16th Floor, Toronto, Ontario, M5J 2S3. The deadline for submission is July 22, 2009, 6 PM.
Two winners per province will be chosen to attend a half-day hockey clinic in Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday, August 15, 2009, led by Pisani. During the second half of the day, winners will enjoy a friendly game of hockey with their fellow contest winners. Each winner will be accompanied by one parent or guardian – round-trip, economy flights for the winner and their parent/guardian, and one-night accommodation will be offered to each winner.
Contest winners will be making a difference: for each goal that is scored during the game, Schering-Plough Canada will generously donate $500 to benefit four patient associations dedicated to raising public awareness and helping Canadians who suffer from these various gastrointestinal and digestive diseases.
If you would like to receive more information on Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, please speak with your doctor or visit www.Ihaveoptions.ca. Valuable information can also be found on the following three associations’ websites:
So lace up your skates and bone up on your hockey skills with Pisani for a fun-filled day that will benefit those living with ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. Join together and be part of a giving community!
